The ARA Newport, Rhode Island office provides technical and engineering services to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in analysis, testing, technical documentation, and upgrades in support of advanced submarine electro-magnetics and technologies for advanced submarine communications, C4I and special electro-magnetic sensors, imaging and electro-optic systems, program metrics and information, and prototype equipment. Support to NUWC includes development of logistic technical support documentation, systems performance analysis, design upgrades, performance verification, equipment maintainability, technical support, and life cycle management support, with emphasis on systems engineering, design and logistic technical documentation, Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), training documentation, Integrated Logistic Support (ILS), and equipment upgrades. ARA provides Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) required in support of submarine electro-magnetic systems on:
- Virginia Class Submarines
- Ohio Class Submarines including SSBN and SSGN Class
- Seawolf Class Submarines
- Los Angeles Class Submarines

ARA's Engineering and Sciences Division specializes in high hazard explosives and
environmental remediation, the cleanup of Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC)
and the development of new technologies.
Engineering and Environmental
ARA personnel have several decades of turnkey experience, from initial work & safety plans through close out reports, performing traditional HTRW, A/E and remediation services for USACE, Navy, Army, DOI, National Guard and private sector firms. ARA's engineering services includes architectural-engineering support services, ranging from characterization and feasibility studies, sampling and environmental monitoring, design and construction oversight/management, permit negotiation, and report preparation. ARA's staff has demonstrated experience with the following:- RCRA, CERCLA, & TSCA Expertise
- In-situ and ex-situ remediation system design, construction, O&M and optimization;
- Environmental Baselines Studies, Site Investigations, Feasibility Studies and Remedial Investigations;
- Remedial design and implementation;
- Decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition of contaminated process equipment, buildings, and other structures;
- Removal and replacement of underground and above-ground sewers and tank systems;
- Removal and treatment of contaminated soils and sediment;
- The development of new technologies.
MEC
ARA's personnel specialize in the high-hazard remediation of residual explosives at Army Ammunition Plants and has performed decontamination and demolition services at Joliet, Badger, Iowa, Volunteer, Kansas, and Twin Cities AAPs. ARA's in-house staff includes seasoned managers and UXO qualified personnel who are graduates of NAVSCOLEOD. ARA's staff has expertise in high-hazard remediation and clearance activities including:- Decontamination/remediation of explosives-contaminated facilities and equipment;
- Removal/treatment of explosives-contaminated soil and groundwater;
- MEC clearance operations at firing and bombing ranges;
- MEC scrap prep and recycling;
- Thermal, chemical and biological decontamination of explosives;
- Mitigation of site chemical warfare material and biological agent confirmation;
- Convective Heat Decontamination;
- Permitting and Variances;
- Underwater UXO location, clearance, and recovery.
